ADIANTUM aleuticum 'Imbricatum' - Medium sized Maidenhair Fern with wirey black stems. Grow in shade or sun in almost any soil. Lime tolerant to a degree.
ADIANTUM chilense - Small Maidehair fern from Peru and Chile with black stems forming dense clumps. Grow in a sheltered position in moist shade.
ADIANTUM pedatum - Dainty deciduous fern with dark purple stems For stony soil in sun or light shade. Protect creeping rhizomes with gravel mulch.
ARACHNOIDES simplicior Variegata - East Indian Holly Fern with hard glossy evergreen fronds that have a broad yellow central band. Hardy and very attractive and best grown in moist light shade.
ASPLENIUM bulbiferum x oblingifolium -
ASPLENIUM oblongifolium - New Zealander with hard glossy pinnae. Needs shelter and protection in winter.
ASPLENIUM scolopendrium - Native Hart's Tongue Fern with long strap like fronds. Good in pots. Evergreen. Dry shade tolerant.
ASPLENIUM scolopendrium 'Angustatum' - Narrow leafed form of the Hart's Tongue fern. Easy in most soils but happier on the limey side and tolerant of dry light shade.
ASPLENIUM scolopendrium Crispum Group - Good form with broad crimped foliage. For any soil in shade or even dry shade. Evergreen
ASPLENIUM scolopendrium 'Muricatum' - Evergreen 'Harts Tongue' Fern' with narrow fronds that are ridged and toothed. Tolerates dry shade and limey soil.
ASPLENIUM scolopendrium Undulatum Group - Form of Hearts Tongue Fern with undulating frond margins. Tolerant of dry shade.
ATHYRIUM 'Ghost' - Lady x Painted Fern with longer grey green fronds than the normal Painted Fern. A bit special this one. Grow in moist soil in shlered light shade.
ATHYRIUM filix-femina 'Frizelliae' - 'Irish Tattling Fern'. Distinctive form with pinnae reduced to small rounded balls. Deciduous. For moist light shade.
ATHYRIUM filix-femina 'Rotstiel' - Pale green deciduous fronds with reddish stems. For a sheltered shady spot in cool moist soil.
ATHYRIUM filix-femina 'Victoriae' - Good form of Lady Fern with very narrow pinnae that overlap at right angles like crosses. Likes moist sheltered shade.
ATHYRIUM nip. var. pictum 'Red Beauty' - Compact form of the Painted Fern with red stems and veining on the silver variegated fronds. Needs moisture and light shade.
ATHYRIUM nip. var. pictum 'Silver Falls' - Almost silver fronds with red rachis. Best grown out of the sun in moist soil.
ATHYRIUM nip. var. pictum 'Ursula's Red' - Japanese Painted Fern with pronounced red midrib in new spring growth. Hardy but prefers pampering in a sheltered spot in light shade.
ATHYRIUM otophorum var. oakanum - Delightful fern with grey/green leaves and wine red midribs. For moist sheltered shade. Semi-deciduous.
ATHYRIUM vidalii - Similar to the 'Painted Fern' with reddish new fronds but taller and more open in appearance. For moist soil in sheltered light shade.
BLECHNUM auriculatum - syn B. hastatum. Smaller than B. chilense with finer narrower fronds. Hardiness still to be assessed. Grow in moist shtered shade.
BLECHNUM chilense - Exotic looking evergreen fern with dark leathery fronds forming large clumps through time. Requires moist acid soil in shade to do well with me. Often misnamed but I think I have the true species. Good large plants.
BLECHNUM fluviatile - Hardy New Zealander with evergreen foliage and narrow vertical fertile fronds. Grow in moist acid soil in shade.
BLECHNUM minus - The 'Swamp Kiokio' is slow spreading with coppery young fronds and lives in wet shady sheltered areas. Similar to B.'Nova-Zealandiae'.
BLECHNUM montanum - The 'Mountain Kiokio' is found in all over New Zealand often in mountain areas. Has broad arching fronds reddish when young. Like moist shade or sun. Should be hardy in UK.
BLECHNUM niponicum - Looks similar to B. spicant but needs a little sheter. The young evergreen fronds are pink eventually turning pale green. Grow in lime free soil in moist shade.
BLECHNUM nova zealandiae - In New Zealand a giant fern but more likely to reach 1 mtr in the UK. Will need a sheltered spot in light shade in moist well drained soil.
BLECHNUM nudum - 'The Fishbone Water Fern'. Large Australian fern which forms a short trunk through time with long laddered fronds. Tenderish and needs moist soil in shade.
BLECHNUM spicant - 'Hard Fern'. Deeply cut narrow fronds. Good for tree stumps etc.. Needs moist acid soil in shade.
BLECHNUM vulcanicum - The 'Korokio' fern grows in road verges and woodland edge in moist fertile soil in shade or sun. It has broad fairly triangular fronds. Should be hardy in most temperate areas.
CYATHEA cooperi - Young plants of this handsome but tender tree fern. The fronds of the 'Lacy Tree Fern' can be 1.2 to 2.5 metres long. Grow outdoors in sheltered shade in summer and bring in for the winter.
CYRTOMIUM falcatum - Japanese Holly Fern' with solid broad dark green pinnae. Needs to be grown in a sheltered location and protected in winter in colder areas. Grow in light shade in dry or moist soil.
CYRTOMIUM falcatum 'Rochfordianum' - Select form of the Japanese Holly Fern with long arching fronds bearing holly like pinnae. Grow in a sheltered spot in light moist shade.
CYRTOMIUM fortunei - Japanese Holly Fern' Thin leathery holly shaped dark green pinnae, Needs a moist sheltered position in shade and winter protection. More hardy than C.falcatum. Evergreen Too large for mail order.
CYSTOPTERIS dickieana - This rare little rock fern is native to sea cliffs near Aberdeen and almost extinct in the wild. Sun tolerant but keep roots cool.
DICKSONIA antartica - 2 year old plants of the 'tree fern' with long arching fronds. Needs to be grown in a sheltered spot in light shade or sun with ample moisture, otherwise don't waste your time. 20cm trunks-£19.50, 30cm trunks-£35.00, Larger plants are available to collect from the nursery.
DICKSONIA fibrosa - Slightly shorter than D. antartica with sorter darker fronds. New Zealand native. Grow in moist light shade protected from strong winds and water from the top regularly in the growing season. 10 ltr pots also for £45.00.
DICKSONIA squarrosa - Not as hardy as the better known D. antartica and D.fibrosa and has a narrower trunk. Grow in light shade and keep moist and sheltered from cold winds.
DOODIA meadia - Amazing Australasian fern with deep red young fronds turning to pink then green. Related to Blechnum. Needs a fair bit of shelter and best under cover in winter in colder parts of Scotland.
DRYOPTERIS affinis 'Crispa Gracilis' - (Syn Congesta) Evergreen tight clump of glossy fronds with crisped pinnae. For shade or some sun in any soil.
DRYOPTERIS affinis 'Cristata' - The 'King Fern' has spectacular fronds with curious terminal crests. Evergreen in a sheltered position. Moist acid soil in shade.
DRYOPTERIS affinis 'Cristata Angustata' - Narrow overlapping fronds, shiny and evergreen. For moist acid soil in shade.
DRYOPTERIS affinis 'Pinderi' - Upright fern with erect narrow evergreen fronds. Happy in any situation.
DRYOPTERIS carthusiana - Hardy, tough and tolerant of boggy conditions. Like the buckler fern but with narrow fronds.
DRYOPTERIS clintoniana - Easy to grow attractive fern for wet or dry situations in sheltered shade away from strong winds.
DRYOPTERIS complexa 'Stablerae' - Select form with tall and erect with fronds. Evergreen but still looks best with the previous years fronds removed. Tolerant of any position except extremes.
DRYOPTERIS crassirhizoma - Japanese fern somewhat similar to D.wallichiana with pale yellow green fronds. Appreciates a sheltered situation in moist shade.
DRYOPTERIS cycadina - Syn D. atrata. Deciduous glossy green fronds like a shuttlecock black spores on reverse in late summer. Shade and moisture.
DRYOPTERIS dilitata 'Crispa Whiteside' - Broad triangular fronds with soft crispy appearance. Compact habit. Needs moist shade. Semi evergreen.
DRYOPTERIS dilitata 'Grandiceps' - Form of the Broad Buckler Fern with crested pinnae and the frond ends are crested in a ball shape. Grows in any situation,
DRYOPTERIS dilitata 'Lepidota Cristata' - Delicate looking fronds with narrow and cristated pinnae. Tolerant of most conditions.
DRYOPTERIS erythrosora - The buds are pink and unfurl coppery then green. Unusual and uncommon. Semi-evergreen. For moist soil in light shade.
DRYOPTERIS erythrosora 'Brilliance' - The Autumn Fern with Feiry orange young fronds that keep their colour right into summer and will tolerate almost full sun or shade. Grow in moist well drained soil.
DRYOPTERIS erythrosora var. prolifera - As type with pink then coppery new growth but with narrower pinnae. For moist soil in light sheltered shade.
DRYOPTERIS filix-mas 'Barnesii' - Very tall with narrow upright fronds. Tolerant of sun and dryish conditions.
DRYOPTERIS filix-mas 'Crispa Cristata' - Native male fern with crispy pinnae and crested ends. Compact and tolerates a difficult situations. Deciduous.
DRYOPTERIS goldieana - 'Giant Wood Fern' for leafy soil. Golden green fronds are very decorative in spring. For moist acid shade. Deciduous.
DRYOPTERIS marginalis - Tough North American fern which is slow to build a single crown. Good in moist woodland.
DRYOPTERIS tokyoensis - Medium upright fern for shade with narrow pale green fronds. For humus rich acid soil.
DRYOPTERIS wallichiana - Dark green fronds with stems covered in dark brown hair giving a spectacular overall effect. For moist shade.
GYMNOCARPIUM dryopteris 'Plumosum' - Triple headed fronds forming a triangle of delicate green foliage from wirey stems. Spreader for peaty well drained soil in light shade
MATTEUCCIA struthiopteris - 'Ostrich Fern' Huge fronds unfurl like a giant shuttlecock. Deciduous and spreading. For moist soil in light shade. Clay tolerant.
ONOCLEA sensibilis - Spreading woodland fern with triangular fronds coppery when young. Deciduous. For rich moist soil out of sun.
OSMUNDA claytoniana - The Interrupted Fern is a strong grower and has pink hairs on the fronds in spring. Deciduous for moist soil in lt shade.
OSMUNDA japonicum - Similar to O.regalis with longer basal stems and leafier tops but generally shorter and of course from Japan. Grow in moist soil in light shade.
OSMUNDA regalis - 'Royal Fern' Large upright fern with coppery young growth. Fertile fronds turn rusty brown like an Astilbe. Happy in very wet soil.
OSMUNDA regalis 'Cristata' - Flat crested form of the Royal Fern with a compact habit. For moist or wet soil in lt shade or sun.
PELLAEA rotundifolia - The Button Fern forms an evergreen mound attractive fronds with round pinnae. Grow in a sheltered well drained moist spot in light shade. Maybe keep under cover in winter.
POLYPODIUM cambricum 'Hornet' - Natural dwarf cultivar found in North Wales with a horn like bristle at the tip of each pinnae. Grow in sun or light shade in moist or dry soil.
POLYPODIUM cambricum 'Macrostachyon' - Similar and mistaken for P. Longicaudatum with its long terminal pinnae. Discovered in Ireland. Grow in sun or shade in moist or dry soil.
POLYPODIUM cambricum 'Pulcherrimum Addison' - Form with finely cut pinnae found naturally in the lake district in the 1860's. Grow in sun or light shade in moist or dry soil.

POLYSTICHUM braunii - A very hardy evergreen fern producing new growth in a spectacular silver flush. For moist shady acid conditions.
POLYSTICHUM dycei - One of the largest Polystichums with long arching lacy fronds like a Dicksonia. Produces occasional bulbils. Grow in almost any soil in light shade.
POLYSTICHUM munitum - 'American Sword Fern' Evergreen tough and easy, with glossy toothed pinnae. Will take sun if mulched.
POLYSTICHUM retrosopaleaceum - A Japanese fern similar to P.polybepharum with glossy green pinnae. Very attractive fronds and easy to grow in light shade or sun in moist or dry soil.
POLYSTICHUM setiferum - Soft Shield Fern. Good fern for well drained soil in light shade. Sun tolerant if moist. Almost evergreen but more effective if old fronds removed in spring - like most ferns.
POLYSTICHUM setiferum Acutilobum Group - Syn P. proliferum. Narrow fronds with sharply pointed segments.Robust, evergreen and easy. Good in dry shade.

WOODWARDIA fimbriata - The 'Giant Chain Fern' is evergreen and throws up erect fronds to 2 metres making it perfect for a dramatic effect. It will however need a sheltered situation in neutral to acid soil in shade.
