CHUSQUEA couleou - South American species which will make a huge specimen with thick culms. Tough and hardy especially in coastal regions. Grow in moist soil in sun or light shade.
CHUSQUEA cumingii - Short species for a mild sheltered garden with small leaves on short spikey branches. Should make a good pot plant. Grow in moist well drained soil in sun or light shade.
CHUSQUEA montana - Great dwarf(ish) Bamboo with small leaves for moist acid soil. Leaf nodes are swollen. Grow in cool moist soil in light shade or sun.
FARGESIA dracocephala - Tall bamboo with dense flat leaves and thin stems. Good specimen in ground or in tubs. Moist soil in light shade.
FARGESIA murieliae 'Joy' - Excellent variety for growing in a container. Tough and wind resistant. Grow in sun or shade in moist soil especially if grown in a container.
FARGESIA murieliae 'Jumbo' - Bigger and faster growing form than 'Simba'. Good bamboo for windbreak or as specimen. Moist soil in sun or light shade.
FARGESIA murieliae 'Simba' - Compact bamboo for pot or as screen. Wind resistant and hardy. Moist soil in sun or light shade.
FARGESIA nitida 'Great Wall' - This form of F. nitida is very slow spreading and like the species is extremely hardy. The young culms are quite dark turning green with age. Grow in sun or shade in moist soil.
FARGESIA robusta 'Wolong' - Taller and larger leafed form of the species which has an upright habit and creamy white leaf sheaths. Grow in light shade in rich moist soil.
FARGESIA rufa - Recently introduced bamboo and an excellent specimen plant with fountain effect and very attractive foliage that is wind resistant.
INDOCALAMUS solidus - Spreading bamboo with slender culms (stems) and large 12cm leaves. It needs space and shelter or can be grown in a container.
INDOCALAMUS tessellatus - The largest leafed Sasa bamboo (up to 50cm) forming large dense (but not too invasive) clumps. Very decorative. Grow in light shade or sun.
PHYLLOSTACHYS aurea - Slow clumping bamboo with thick pale green stems which turn more yellow in full sun. Slow to spread. Very upright and makes a good specimen in the ground or a tub.
PHYLLOSTACHYS aureosulcata f. aureocaulis - Very hardy bamboo with beautiful ochre stems with an occasional zig-zag. The sulcus (groove) turns reddish. Good specimen and rare. For moist light shade or sun.
PHYLLOSTACHYS aureosulcata f. spectabilis - Very showy bamboo with (occasionally zig-zag) golden culms with green grooves. Very hardy and beautiful in a sunny spot.
PHYLLOSTACHYS bissetii - Very hardy and robust bamboo with dark green leaves and stems that grow earlier than most and till late autumn. Makes a good specimen or windbreak.
PHYLLOSTACHYS glauca - Good bamboo as a hedger or windbreak as well as specimen. Young shoots blue/green.Tough and vigorous.
PHYLLOSTACHYS humilis - Fast spreading species suitable for cold exposed gardens with dark young shoots turning golden yellow in sun. Grow in moist soil in sun or light shade.
PHYLLOSTACHYS nigra f. punctata - Black Bamboo with strong growing culms which emerge green becoming blacker with age. Also large 35L plants for collection only.
PHYLLOSTACHYS proprinqua - Tall clump forming bamboo that's not too invasive and is very tough and makes a good screen. Grow in rich moist soil in sun or shade.
PHYLLOSTACHYS vivax f. aureocaulis - Very showy specimen bamboo with golden yellow culms, some green stripes appear on younger stems. Tough and very hardy. Grow in sun or light shade in moist soil.
PLEIOBLASTUS hindsii - A tough Bamboo similar in appearance to P. simonii. Makes a large impressive clump but not too invasive.
PLEIOBLASTUS pygmaeus - Confusion with this variable bamboo species usually due to wrongly named plants. I grow this as the dwarf form forming dense mats of groundcover. For sun or shade and plenty of space or in a wide container.
PLEIOBLASTUS pygmaeus 'Mirrezuzume' - Normally only grows to 20cm but can grow taller. This bamboo spreads fast to make effective groundcover with its dark green 'ferny' leaves. Grow in sun or light shade.
PLEIOBLASTUS simonii - A very tough and large clump forming bamboo reaching anything from 3-8m high with olive green culms (stems). Good for screening. 35L to big for mail order.
PLEIOBLASTUS viridistriatus 'Vagans' - Dwarf(ish) with medium sized green leaves that have a cream edge in winter. Moist light shade. Good in pot.
PSEUDOSASA japonica - This is a tough and spreading bamboo and really makes a statement but can be contained in a big tub. Makes a very dense screen with large dark green foliage.
SASA tsuboiana - Large leafed bamboo with slender erect habit. Less invasive than other Sasa. Also works in a large tub. Grow in a more sheltered position in light shade.
SASAELLA masamuneana 'Albostriata' - Rampant spreading bamboo with fading variegated leaves. Prefers sun.
SEMIARUNDINARIA fastuosa - Bolt upright bamboo with thick stems and unique pink lined sheaths like mother of pearl. For moist shade and a bit of shelter.
